Statement from President and CEO Leah Binder on Unified Push for Hospital Transparency

May 18, 2016

In an unprecedented move, four national health plans and one regional plan have signed a joint letter urging hospitals to publicly report vital safety and quality performance data by participating in the 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Aetna, Anthem, Inc., Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and Health Net of California all signed the letter, which was sent last week to over 3,700 hospitals across the country.

We commend this leadership from the five health plans, and thank them for unifying to promote hospital transparency.

The plans are part of the Leapfrog Partners Advisory Committee, an exclusive group of national and regional health plans, hospital systems, and enterprise vendors that advise Leapfrog on key industry trends and collaborate on a number of partner-driven initiatives. The Partners Advisory Committee has helped Leapfrog understand trends in health policy and delivery of health services, and helped employers and other purchasers encourage hospital participation in Leapfrog to improve value.

The Leapfrog Hospital Survey is the gold standard in hospital transparency: a voluntary, free tool that assesses hospital safety, quality, and efficiency based on national performance measures that are of specific interest to health care purchasers and consumers. The measures also provide hospitals with the opportunity to benchmark their progress in improving the safety, quality, and efficiency of the care they deliver. Hospitals that are interested in participating should visit the Get Started section of thewebsite.
